Dr. Mikao Usui

Reiki is an ancient healing method rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in March of 1922.

Dr. Usui was born in Taniai, Japan, in 1865. As a youth, he studied a Japanese version of Qi Gong, and as a grown man he traveled extensively, studying medicine, religion, psychology, spiritual development. He worked for the department of Health/Welfare and later became a businessman.

Later in life, he became a Buddist monk. While on a 21 day fast on sacred Mt. Kurama, Dr. Usui had an enlightened experience and during that Satori, he received the Reiki light, or attunement. He generously shared this ancient technique, healing and attuning students until his death in 1926.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a system of healing that originated in Japan and dates back to the end of the 19th century.
Reiki is a Japanese word that translates to Universal Energy:
Rei-all creation, people, plants, animals, etc.
Ki- life energy. Reiki assists with anything physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual.

Reiki is a healing technique that promotes relaxation, stress relief and may aid in the easing of pain. It is a gentle, hands-on therapy that allows the flow of energy to be available to the body to help balance, or boost areas that have become stagnant, because of illness, injury, or stress. By opening up the energy flow, (in a similar way to how acupuncture works) it allows the body's own healing properties to heal itself.

How it works

Reiki is a healing technique which functions by a transfer of energy. The energy does not come from the practioner, but flows through the practitioner to the individual's body. The body automatically takes what in needs and uses the energy to heal itself. Reiki is non-invasive, and safe and works with other healing modalities.

What is a Reiki Session Like?

In a Reiki session, you lie, fully clothed on a massage table, or can be done in a seated position. No two Reiki sessions are alike. In a calm atmosphere, with relaxing music, the practitioner places their hands on your body in specific positions from ahead to toe and then on the back of the body. There is no pressure involved and can also be done above the body. For most people, a treatment feels like a wonderful, glowing radiance that flows through and around you. You may feel heat, coolness, or vibration coming from the practitioner's hands. It can produce a feeling of tremendous relaxation and peace and create many beneficial effects that may include a reduction of physical, or emotional pain, or stress.
